Shipping container conversions have been on the rise lately. Now, St Petersburg, Florida will soon see an entire small community of them.
Refurbished off-site in a factory where the inside is fitted as living space is quickly becoming a viable alternative to site and even more traditional off-site housing, The speed to convert shipping containers into living space and the ability to ship them on a flatbed trailer without escorts is an appealing advantage to some developers including Path Communities, the St Pete developer that building this shipping container community.
The appeal of these 31 units of the apartment project is durability and speed of occupancy, as well as lower rents as these shipping container apartments, cost less than traditionally built apartments. The design was done by Carbon Design and Architecture in Sarasota, FL.
All 31 units will be 1-bedroom, 1-bath rentals clocking in at 320 square feet (40’ by 8’). The smaller unit size will allow Path Communities to lease the units for around $1,000/month, which is less than any other new construction rental in downtown St. Pete..
At least two-thirds of the units will be classified as workforce or affordable housing and leased based on the renter’s income as a percentage of Area Median Income (AMI).
The only non-residential shipping container will contain laundry services and around 40 secured bike spaces.
