Wausau Homes cut one third of their workforce at their Rothschild, WI headquarters yesterday. 81 people lost their jobs and only 163 remain at that location. The company will continue their benefits through the end of January, 2009 and pay severance pay based on how long they worked for the company.
In February of this year, 44 people were laid off in the first round of job cuts. In addition, WH Transportation Co., their trucking company that delivers homes for Wausau Homes and its sister company, Sterling Building Systems, laid off 340 people earlier this year.
Tom Schuette, company president, said "The housing market, or the housing economy, has been hurting nationally for quite a while, and we seem to have stabilized, and then the recent financial crisis that has been hitting our country kind of has been a second blow,"
Schuette said he would like Wausau Homes to be in a position to begin hiring again when the economy turns around, though he doesn’t expect that to happen any time soon, and the company didn’t have the ability to wait for a recovery without cutting jobs.
